INTERN

I have been on more train journeys in the last 3 weeks than I have in the last 3 years.

I have been interning in Sheffield with these guys.

You & Me. Another Ian Anderson workshop today. Restricted to just the words ‘you’ and ‘me’, helvetica regular typeface, and black and white colours, we had to try and show a story/narrative between the two words. Inspired by the recent Ian Anderson workshops, my idea was about the general relationship between a student (me) and the tutor (you) and the way the tutor is often critical and looks in great detail at the works the student produces.

POINTLESS

As part of designer Ian Anderson’s workshop I was set the task of doing something pointless for an hour and then documenting whatever it is I did.

I decided to do play my guitar for an hour. But only one note, on one string. I played the open E string every 2 seconds for an hour. That’s 1800 times. Fuck me.

I documented it in the form of and audio recording and a 33 page musical score. All 1800 notes are hand drawn, a process which took me over 1hr30mins.

Why is this pointless?

-From the POV of a listener it is boring, uninspiring and everything music shouldn’t be.

-From the POV of me, or anyone else playing the music on an instrument, it is boring, tiresome, offers no means of expressing yourself and you don’t learn anything. The opposite of what playing an instrument should be about.
